Fade
Fade is a temp mail app for iPhone. A Chrome extension is being built so the same thing works where most signups actually happen, which is a browser on a laptop.
Status
Not released. It is not on the Chrome Web Store, and there is no beta to join.
We are not putting a date on it, because a date we miss is worse than no date at all. When it ships it will be announced on the what's new page, and in the iPhone app.
What it will do
The point is to remove the part where you reach for your phone in the middle of filling in a form:
- Generate a disposable address in the page you are already on. No new tab, no copying between devices.
- Fill it into the email field. The address goes straight into the signup form.
- Surface the verification code as it arrives. Codes are what people actually want from a temp address, so the code gets pulled out of the message rather than making you read the email.
- Expire the same way. Same behaviour as the app: addresses are temporary, and nothing is kept once they are gone.
Why it is worth building
Almost every use of a temp address starts on a desktop. You are part way through a signup, you do not want to hand over your real inbox, and today that means picking up your phone, opening Fade, generating an address, and typing it back in by hand. It works, but the switching is the worst part of it.
The extension is not a different product. It is the same inbox, reached from the place where the friction actually is.
